Girls Wanted is a BLOC ministries Lower Price Hill group for young women, transitioning into adult women, meeting every week to support each other.
The group gathers every Wednesday starting at 6 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m. in the Creative Arts Building, hosted by Lisa Jones, the Director of Girls wanted and leader of BLOC’s jail ministry. Jones leads discussions along with the help of other leaders. Girls Wanted started in October 2015.
“I started thinking about it in the spring of 2015,” Jones says. Jones explains that she was directed by God to start this group after being involved in another group and seeing women go through adversities; she wanted to help make a change.
During the meeting, you can expect about eight to 15 girls attending, due to coronavirus and tables covered in paper as soon as you walk in. Jones covers the tables in paper so the girls can just come in and freely draw.
“So a girl can just come and if she feels uncomfortable; she can just color,” Jones says.
You can also expect to enjoy some food with fellow members later on that evening. Girls Wanted gets free food from restaurants including Skyline & Chick-Fil-A, along with Jones’ husband cooking here and there. At some point, after playing a game, all the girls and leaders circle up, talk about life and let each other know that they are there for one another.
“They don’t even ask if they can play their own music,” Jones says. “I will be playing the Jesus music.”
If someone is looking to join Girls Wanted, lucky for you, there are no requirements to join, besides being a girl. You can just show up to a meeting, be respectful towards one another and as long as you can follow the rules you’re more than welcome!
Since starting in 2015, Jones does not plan on ending this group any time soon and even has a leader to take her place in mind for when the time comes.
